"On 22 September 2007, I played a solo show at the Union Chapel in Islington, London. If you were there, thanks for coming - it was a great night among many great nights. It was about as relaxed as I have ever felt on a stage and I'm indebted to all who came and created such an atmosphere in such a beautiful little church. I'm thrilled to announce that the DVD of the concert is now ready; The Boom Boom Boys shot and edited it, I mixed it myself, and it looks and sounds great! The vibe was lovely and I think we've captured it. There's also bonus material of a handful of excerpts from my diary - a few interesting days including prison in Poland, the Pulp Fiction evening in San Diego and the bizarre 37 hour flight to Mexico City via most of America (so that the FBI could arrest Cat Stevens, and - very nearly - me too..)

Dutch rock outfit THE GATHERING will release its long-awaited new album, "The West Pole", on May 4 via the band's own label, Psychonaut Records. More information is available on THE GATHERING's official webshop.
"The West Pole" will mark the recording debut of THE GATHERING's new singer, Silje Wergeland from the Norwegian band OCTAVIA SPERATI. Drummer Hans Rutten says, "Silje has been the singer of OCTAVIA SPERATI for eight years, including several other projects. She did a superb job [on 'The West Pole']. This album also includes two very talented guest singers: the Dutch Anne van den Hoogen and Mexican Marcela Bovio (from STREAM OF PASSION), and some other guest musicians."

'Three', as the title suggests, is the third album to come from Jim Diamond (vocals) and Tony Hymas (keyboards) under the name 'Ph.D.' It began life in late 2006 and is the first album of new material from Ph.D. for more than 25 years! As such, it was hotly anticipated by the band's cult fan base. Original drummer Simon Phillips plays on 3 tracks.
In the early 80s Ph.D. was the coming together of three hugely experienced and respected musicians - Jim Diamond, Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips.
Jim Diamond had previously been the vocalist with British rock band ‘Bandit’ who released two albums for Arista Records. He’s recorded with both Tony Banks and Steve Hackett, including...
- ‘Days of Long Ago’ on Steve Hackett’s 1999 album Darktown
- ‘You Call This Victory’ on Tony Banks’ 1986 album Soundtracks
- ‘Sailing’ (charity single) by ‘Rock Against Repatriation’ - an all-star band assembled by Steve Hackett.
Tony Hymas and Simon Phillips were members of the Jeff Beck Group during Jeff’s popular late 70s fusion period. Tony recorded and co-wrote tracks on Jeff’s 1980 album 'There and Back' and was also a member of the Jack Bruce band in addition to being a classical and jazz composer and pianist.
Simon Phillips was already a seasoned session drummer. He’s arguably best known now for his time with Toto, but has played with numerous acts and artists including The Who, Mike Oldfield and Phil Manzanera. Simon played on Mike Rutherford’s solo album Smallcreep’s Day and also contributed to the ‘Sailing’ single from Steve Hackett’s Rock Against Repatriation project (mentioned above). More recently Simon has been working with Steve and Chris Squire on as yet unreleased material!

DREAM THEATER
Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Progressive metal veterans DREAM THEATER have announced BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS as the title of their tenth studio album. The band commenced work on the album – their second for Roadrunner Records, following up 2007's Systematic Chaos — in October of last year.
Roadrunner will release the record on June 23. In addition to the standard version CD, the album will also be available on vinyl LP, as well as a three-disc Special Edition CD that will include the full album, a CD of instrumental mixes of the album and a CD of six cover songs, the titles of which will be revealed at a later date.
Six weeks prior to the June 23 street date, Roadrunner will release one cover song per week through digital retailers.
Drummer Mike Portnoy and guitarist John Petrucci are once again at the helm as producers, while Paul Northfield mixed the record.
The band will embark on a world tour in support of the album beginning in Europe throughout June which will be followed by the second edition of the band’s PROGRESSIVE NATION tour featuring Zappa Plays Zappa, Pain Of Salvation and Beardfish throughout North America in July/August.
A video for the first single, "A Rite of Passage" will be shot in late March.

HOSTSONATEN
Springsong

'Springsong' is the 4st and final chapter of Hostsonaten's 'Seasoncycle Suite' and has been originally published by Sublime Label in 2001.
The original Cd is out of print by a few years and now AMS records have decided not only to re-print it but to do a brand new album only in little part based on the old version.
Starting by the 'exterior' aspect we find a wonderful new graphyc work completely different form the previous one, in line with the 'Seasons project' and with excellent paintings by Davide Guidoni. All in a gatefold LP-replica box with a deluxe booklet with new credists, informations, images and details.
Musically the 2001 work has been completely changed. The album has been remixed in high definition quality, every single track has been cleaned and re-equalized to give a new and strong dinamic to the music, more powerful and trenchant.
Fabio Zuffanti and Robbo Vigo, the authors of this restyling, have also gave light to a great number of new musical details and, most important thing, have played a lot of new musical parts absent in the old version.
In particoular:
- New mellotron parts played with a real mellotron (the old parts were played with samplers)
- New bass in the whole album
- New moog, bass pedals and percussion parts
There's also a 13 minutes bonus track (Suite bretonne), acoustic suite that is the embryo from wich Springsong is born.

Springtides

In march 2009 the first solo album by Fabio Zuffanti comes out.
Tha cd, entitled 'Fabio Zuffanti', is published by italian label Ams-Vm2000/BTF. The lyrics of the song 'Domeniche senza tramonto' are written by italian writer Tommaso Labranca.
The deluxe cover album (gatefold Lp-replica with deluxe booklet) is done by Davide Guidoni with photos by Claudio Castellini.
Zuffanti's solo album is SOLO in the real sense of the word: Fabio has composed, arranged, played, recorded and produced the whole cd. Only the mixing works have been done at Zerodieci studio.

Live After All DVD

n late 2008 Overhead was invited by Metal Mind Productions to perform at the first edition of the Progrock festival, which took place in mid February 2009 at the beautiful Wyspian´ski Theater in Katowice, Poland. The show was recorded and will be released on the band’s first DVD. The performance featured a selection of songs from the band's latest two albums. The bonus material will also include live recordings from France, Belgium and Finland filmed between 2007-2008, an interview with the singer Alex Keskitalo and much more!
Overhead plays melodic progressive rock that varies from gentle ambient atmospheres, through more traditional rock to heavier moments. Already the band’s debut album “Zumanthum” (2002), caught the attention of prog rock fans. The second album “Metaepitome” (2005) was well received around the world. “Metaepitome” gained excellent reviews and was acclaimed as ‘the album of the month’ by many magazines, webzines and radio stations. On March 1st 2009 Foxtrot Music will release a brand new album "The Fading Ghosts Of Twilight" - by the new project called AGENTS OF MERCY. The album will initially be a LTD edition Digipack with 77 minutes of brand new music .
Agents Of Mercy is a project spawned from a low key acoustic project that Roine Stolt set out to do in 2008, but after getting singer Nad Sylvan (Unifaun) onboard to do a few "guest vocals" it turned into a full production prog album where Nad got more involved and did most of both lead and backing vocals on the album.
Songs got longer and more elaborated and more symphonic and the common love of late 60's and early 70's prog is all over this album.
A few favourite drummers tracked drums for the 12 tracks, Pat Mastelotto (King Crimson, Stickmen etc ) Zoltan Csörsz (TFK,Karmakanic) and Jimmy Keegan (Santana,Spocks Beard Live ) the eccentric Biggo Zelfries did most of the piano and analogue keyboards and TFK bassist Jonas Reingold add some fretless bass spice too.

MINIMUM VITAL

MINIMUM VITAL is certainly amongst the most original bands from the Eighties Progressive rock scene: twin brothers Thierry & Jean-Luc PAYSSAN mix art-rock influences from YES, guitar parts as fluid as Mike OLDFIELD's, an amazing virtuosity coming from jazz-rock fusion, many innovations and a deep mark from medieval and southern European traditional musics. This French band has built its own style, marked by a huge identity and originality, and is now recognized as a reference in itself. "Envol Triangles/Les Saisons Marines" gathers the first audio-cassette (1985) and the first vinyl (1987). Beautiful album recorded on the Musea label, "Sarabandes" (1990) reflects the strong personality of the band. MINIMUM VITAL is not far from equalling masters such as YES or CAMEL. "La Source" (1993) sees the inclusion of female singer Sonia NEDELEC and her counterpart Jean-Baptiste FERRACCI. They use a language of her own, melting Latin, Occitan (A dialect from the South of France) and Portuguese. The live video "Les Mondes De..." allows to understand better the strange attraction that charmed the American audience, reputedly very demanding, during the 51 minutes that the Los Angeles' ProgFest 1994 performance lasted. It comprises pieces from the three first albums, as well as unreleased tracks. "Esprit D'Amor" (1997) is a complete renewal of the genre, letting the usual apart. "Au Cercle De Pierre..." (1997) allows the listener to appreciate the charisma and the energy of the band on stage. The CD includes twelve titles, two of them being unreleased (One studio track), and is completed by a multimedia part (With biography, music and video). After a seven-year silence, so hard to stand even with the VITAL DUO experience, MINIMUM VITAL is eventually back with a new studio opus. "Atlas" (2004) continues the same way, bettering its style. The seventh opus "Capitaines" seems to be back to the source (Pun intended !). Sometimes instrumental, often sung, these nine pieces are faithful to MINIMUM VITAL's own musical style. With a strong work on percussion, including unusual and ethnic sounds, the band succeeds in creating a well-balanced music, melodious, including tracks among the best the band composed so far, like "Capitaines", "La Croix De Bourghi Bandô" or "La Route". A timeless music, composed and played with a strong desire for perfection.

APOCALYPSE has been the first Brazilian band signed by Musea for a new record. Released at the end of the Eighties, "Lendas Encantadas" (1989) revealed an exceptional band playing Progressive rock music full of energy, obviously inspired by MARILLION. The reissue includes four bonus-tracks recorded in 1996. The second album "Perto Do Amanhecer" (1995) proves to be in the same vein, but even better ! These twelve concise pieces mix peaceful acoustic moments with more agressive and nearly hard-rock passages. And the Portuguese singing gives the music an exotic and very nice touch. More than the usual quality Progressive rock with symphonic influences, it delivers us those forgotten feelings like peace, love and compassion. It is, undoubtly, an album worth listening to ! Available on both CD and DVD formats, "Live In Rio" features the band performing in the Rio ArtRock Festival 2005. That's the occasion to discover a new repertoire, as well as old tracks sung by the newcomer Gustavo DEMARCHI. His particularity is to sing in English, unlike his predecessor. Thanks to this, the music sounds more neo Progresive than ever ! One hour and a quarter of music you cannot afford to miss ! "The Bridge Of Light" has been captured live in front of an enthusiastic brazilian audience in november 2006. You just need to listen to the two opening songs to realize how good this band is: the first one gets closer to the best of DEEP PURPLE, whereas the second one strongly evokes FISH's MARILLION. Long promised second album from this stellar Norwegian symphonic band is now with us. Before the release of Hinterland, the band had made available (through their website) two lengthy demo tracks that garnered a lot of buzz. These tracks "Imperial Winter White Dwarf" and "Leprechan Behind The Door" appear here is re-recorded versions. The rest of the disc consists of material drawn from the band's past as well as one of the tracks from the Hinterland sessions that never got finished. Its not a long disc but its definitely a matter of quality over quantity. If you like Mellotrons, Hammond organds, flutes, retro sounding guitars....look no further. Essential listening for the any symphonic rock fan.

Sings the Alan Parsons Project That Never Was (3 de abril)

10 missing Project songs by the Creator and Writer of the Alan Parsons Project, Eric Woolfson – the voice of ‘Eye In The Sky’, ‘Don’t Answer Me’ and ‘Time’- Includes Woolfson singing two songs from his POE musical. Although the recordings were made at different places and at different times, the final mixes were completed by Austin Ince in Abbey Road Studio, October 2008. I'm also grateful to Austin for the contributions he made to the instrumentation on several tracks and to Haydn Bendall for his considerable contributions.

Woolfson:"I’ve been working on the Project archives and discovering some unfinished songs. Often they are songs that Alan and I couldn’t agree on and so got shelved. I’ve now completed some of these songs and I’m about to release my own CD of The Alan Parsons Project that never was. They are generally songs that Alan didn’t like or wouldn’t have liked if he’d had the opportunity."
